In this second opera of Wagner's Ring Cycle, Siegmund and Sieglinde,
long-lost brother and sister, meet in passion as adult man and woman.
The sword was thrust into the ash tree by their father, the god Wotan,
who would appear on earth in wolf form. Sieglinde has waited for years
to fall in love with the hero who could pull the sword from the tree,
who tragically turns out to be her brother. |
